2009 (Mar 22) Alabama Hills, U2 Joshua Tree, White Swan Talc Mine, Darwin Hills : Woke up and it was snowing in Alabama Hills, with no visibility around us. After scrambling around the area, we got breakfast and talked about what to do. Sparkles wasn't really prepared for the cold, so we decided to drive around. I showed her the U2 Joshua Tree. Still pretty cool even on my 5th trip there. Then we saw a peak that looked hikable, so we chacked it out for future hiking. We got close but it was still a long walk to get to the start. We stopped at White Swan Talc Mine, and walked thru the tunnels, and found newspapers that dated back to 1956. One even had an article about a school in Redondo Beach that was being built. It was Aviation High, 1 block from our condo in Hawthorne! Sparkles had not been to any cabins, so we visited the Buckhorn Box Cabin. Then we drove to Darwin and up to the mine. Then thru the town, and thru Darwin Hills. We stopped at Miller Spring, then China Garden to see the pond with koi in it. It was windy and cold out, but a great day to do what we did. 2009 (Mar 20) El Paso Peaks and Klinker Mountain : This was my first weekend driving since rotator cuff surgery 9 weeks ago. I rented an automatic, since my FJ is a manual and I'm still working only on movement and not strengthening yet. I met TomG near Trona Road and Hwy 395 on Friday morning. We started out with an easy hike to El Paso Peaks since I wanted to see flowers and heard it was good there. I felt good and wanted more, so we headed for Spangler Peak. After a few minutes into the drive on the bumpy dirt road, we decided it was not a good idea for the RAV4. We headed for Klinker Mountain, and hiked from the west face. This was my 3rd time on this summit, but a new route for both of us. Lots of flowers on the way up, and I got to see a Desert Candle, a new flower for me. Beautiful day! (wk 166, day 1)

2008 (Dec 30) Winnedumah Piute Monument : I've been wanting to do Winnedumah, but didn't get much of a response from others. I had a free day to hike, but I got up late, then drove almost 2 hrs to get to the start. I missed the dirt road that added 2.7 mi to my already late start. Once on track, it was an enjoyable hike. I had a turnaround time, but when I got to the top of the ridge, I saw the 80' spire. It looked so close, so I went for it. It turned out to be another 45 minutes of hiking, so once there, I changed into dry clothes, took photos, and headed back. The register was on the SW side, but I didn't want to climb over snow covered boulders, so I will hike it again when I have more time. Hiking back on a moonless night would have been slow without boot tracks in the snow to follow. I couldn't tell which way to go, and paid close attention to my tracks and the GPS. This was a fun hike, and next time I will get an early start. (wk 154)

After a 30 min break on Klinker Mtn, Rachel and Jim turned back. TomG and I continued to Dome Mountain. We stayed 45 min just below the summit and out of the wind, then headed back. The wind was blowing hard on the last ridge, enough to throw TomG around. I couldn’t go forward, so we dropped down into the canyon and followed it out to the road. 2008 (Dec 12) Almond Mountain and Black Water Well in the Lava Mountain Range : I met TomG in the middle of nowhere, then we drove to the east side of Almond mountain, hoping we wouldn’t run into any “Road closed” signs. We lucked out! We were able to drive close, and the gloomy skies cleared up. We could see the San Gabriels, San Gorgonio, Charleston, Panamints, Town Peak/Pinto Peak, Matarango and Argus, Southern Sierra clear view of Owens, Spanish Needle and Olancha, Langley, and Trona Pinnacles. Almond Mountain summit is not what is labeled on the map. Its to the north, of what you see on the map and obviously way higher, and the benchmark is on a lower bump to the east. So we stopped at the bump, then continued to the summit. On the drive out, we checked out Blackwater Well Beautiful Day!(wk 152, day 1 of 3)

So I camped at the U2 Joshua Tree for the night. In the morning I took my time driving due to a misunderstanding in meeting time, etc, and got there a little later than I should have. TomG and Sierra Sparkles were on their way down to look for me. Oops! Sorry guys! Sparkles was also jetlagged from her trip to India and returned a day before me. We hiked to Colville Ridge, and SS and I got to see our first Wickiup! There were petroglyphs and Indian Rock Circles and we followed an old indian trail, some of it with big trees growing on it. On the way back, we ran into Rachel. TomG went home, and the girls camped out and yakked til about 10pm. A beautiful day and night to be in the mountains! 2008 (Oct 31) Silver Mountain in the Coso Range : We followed Zdon's directions, but road closure took us to the wrong canyon. TomG figured out we were in Thorndyke Canyon, instead of Lacey Canyon when our route didn't match what was on his map. Thorndyke Canyon was off his map. We climbed up a steep ridge, and tried circumnavigating to avoid dropping back down. We came across other big drops which we couldn't see on the GPS, and took us farther to the east than we expected. This made our 9 mi/2800'gain easy trip into a 15.5 mi/4172'gain day. We got to see an old mine, a reservoir with dead snakes and mummified jackrabbits, an old cabin, a live snake, wild horses, and beautiful desert tracked with only hoofprints. Stuff we would have missed if we went a different way. We kept in mind, "a bad day in the mountains is better than a good day at work". We almost passed on making the summit due to time, but when we got closer "summit fever" hit and we summitted just before dark. We headed down the steep west side and turned on the headlamps as we approached the base of the mountain. After walking a flat area for an hour or so, we dropped into Lacey Canyon, and hoped we didn't have to deal with dry falls. We only ran into 2, but were able to climb down. We sent at least 3 SPOT checks to show where we were that didn't go thru due to cloud cover. On the summit 8 hrs after we started, we sent one that went thru (clear skies), which had our SPOT checkers a little concerned and calling each other about the situation. 5.5 hrs later we were back at Thorndyke Canyon. It was a beautiful day and night for hiking, and even though it was long. And hiking with TomG is always good company! Tom Gossett's plan for the weekend fell apart, so I had a voice mail from him saying he could hike. He waited for me at Dante's view, while I waited at the turnoff (I sent an e-mail using my iPhone, but he was already on his way). So we got a little bit of a late start, and with temps around 80 deg, it was a beautiful day with great views! Their water was frozen so they went to town for a resupply. We headed straight up to the East Summit, signed the register, then descended to a saddle before heading up to the Black Mountain ridge leading to the summit. After hanging out and enjoying the views for an hour or so, we went back to a really flat FJ tire. So glad TomG was there to change the tire. I can barely lift my camera up with a sprained/strained rotator cuff. He put my "slow leak" spare on, filled it with air and used Fix-A-Flat, and followed me 55 miles to the nearest gas station. After putting more air in the tire, spent an hour talking to him and Robin (MrsG), and Erin showed me a photo of the long-haired TomG as a teen. 2008 (6 Sept) Gossett's 40th Anniversary of first hike and rescue on Towne Pk : Tom Gossett was stranded on Towne Peak 40 years ago (age 13) with his dad and had to be rescued. It was his first hike and they went to the SA-16 Albatross, wearing t-shirts, shorts and tennis shoes. Dad had the lunches, and they had one canteen of water that Tom had for 4 people after Dave and Greg dropped and broke their glass jugs of water, and they did that before they got to the first ridge. Dad got dehydrated and really sick after the Albatross. Dave and Greg went down for help and got the Death Valley Rangers to rescue them. In 2004 I saw his note in the register, and photographed it with the caption "short story, hope it was a good ending". A year later his brother Wild Bill, replied back that everything turned out ok. So now, 40 years later, a group of us joined him on the 40th Anniversary of his first hike and the rescue. I followed dirt roads on the Garmin GPS that SnowDude got me, and killed a few hours before heading home. We had a nice dinner, and I took Monday off to hang out with him on his last day in CA. He still had last minute things to take care of but I got to spend part of the day with him. He left for a 6 month assignment in Australia and returns December 23rd. (wk 125, day 2)

TomG said he would hike if I did, so we drove to Lida Summit and followed the dirt road to the start. As we got our packs together, the sun came out and clouds opened up. Perfect! Magruder Mtn was in the clouds, and stayed like that til our descent. It was cold and windy, so we didn't stay long. We came back a more direct way, and had lunch back at the vehicles. What a great day for a hike! I would have gone for another peak, but this was a long drive for me. (wk 123, day 3 of 3)

Instead, I stopped to put waypoints in the GPS, then headed for camp. It was snowing, and everyone was around the smoldering log in the firepit. 2008 (Apr 18) Part 1: U2's Joshua Tree - Have u found what ur looking 4? : I saw Steve Hall's report on U2s Fallen Joshua Tree from early March. Then I saw Quandary's photos from early April. I had “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for” going thru my head. So when I left after work, I had U2 playing on my iPod. I found a place to pull over and sleep. In the morning I drove to the site, and as I pulled over “I still haven’t found what I’m looking for” played. I started walking, and 2 minutes later two F-18s flew over me (flying low, really loud). Pretty cool! I stayed by "the fallen tree" for an hour, taking photos, looking thru the U2ube (register), watching lizards come up to the tree, just soaking it all in. What a cool spot! (wk 118, day 1 of 3)

We had the option of going to the Desert Hound Mines or going for the summit at our turnaround, so we chose the summit. Then we tried coming back a different way, down a wash with dry falls that added to our hike. I drove a little past PSR for the night and camped. Sunday morning I drove to the Bat Mtn Trailhead, and with a noon start (4x4 road was work) I dayclimbed my peak and got out before 6pm. All was good til I tried to drive out, and couldn't tell where the real 'road' was. I drove in circles, back and forth, then after an hour of getting nowhere I made the decision to drive out when I could see. Safety first, right? It took an hour to drive out Monday morning, then another 90 min to get cell reception. By the time I called SnowDude, he had been sending e-mails to my friends, 3 were already on the road to look for me, and he was just getting ready to call SAR. 2006 (Dec 10) Conglomerate Mesa and Jack Gunn Peak : Dayclimbed Conglomerate Mesa, using only the description from Andy Zdon's 'Desert Summits'. I was on the wrong summit (no map, no waypoints), but found the right one. Then I went for Jack Gunn Peak, and again climbed the wrong peak, but found the right one. Both peaks were just off the edge of my map. Originally I didn't have a plan for Sunday, but since we didn't summit Saturday, I looked thru my book and found these. (wk 47, day 2)

I continued on, and as I approached the brick chimney, I heard my name. Beldar was up there with some friends. It was 85 - 95 deg up there, but the running water helped cool me down. The hike is 6 miles each way, with ~4,000' el gain. (wk 15, day 1)
