2012 (June 5) Mt Hoffman (10,850') from Tioga Road solo day climb (x2) Gate Locked!
I got a late start on this hike. Mammoth is always colder because of location. My internet wasn't working, so trying to get info on iPhone was a PITA. I finally got a report and made the drive, even tho it was late. The line at Tioga Pass was really long at noon, and finally someone came out and let pass holders go thru, which shortened the line really fast. Then tourists driving 30 in a 45 zone, and not pulling over even tho 5 vehicles were behind. Reminded me why I never went to Yosemite before. I got to May Lake Road and it was CLOSED! That added 2 miles each way, but since it was only 6 mi r/t from the trailhead (and it was late) I figured the worst that could happen is I would walk out in the dark on 2 mi of asphalt. I started up the road ~1:05pm, then had to go back to lock my truck. 10 min later I started out again. I only saw one couple at the May Lake Trailhead. Their tracks only went to May Lake. After that I made my own tracks on the new snow that fell the night before. The trail was well ducked, so I only got off once when it turned into a creek and I got a little confused. Temps were ~50 deg, and I had to remove layers (long underwear and fleece top). At the summit it got cool with the clouds blocking the sun. I took pix and put the fleece shirt on and headed back. I got a little chilled and looked at my thermometer which said something around 40 deg. I didn't have glasses on so couldn't see exact temp. I got back at 7:43pm, way before dark. My fingers got really cold so I kept moving instead of stopping to dig for heavier gloves. I didn't use most of the layers in my pack, but I was prepared for colder weather. Another good trip in Yosemite! Even tho it started with too much traffic. :-) (wk 334)Read More
